The risks of "desktop computing" aren't well understood? First of all, compared to what? To cloud computing? (Which is just a fancy name for client server model) Cloud computing is what's not adequately understood here, not native applications.
I may be starting to use client server model apps alot more now because of the Data Liberation Front http://www.dataliberation.org/ which is helping make sure I'll be able to keep practical ownership of my own stuff if/when I decide to leave the client server model again. This is one thing that makes me trust it alot more - a minimized exit cost/hassle.
